Hi everyone - Well, here it is Sunday afternoon, and I'm looking out the window at a sunny, blue sky day. The air is a little chilly and it feels fresh, and I see the leaves in the maple trees are starting to turn yellow and fall to the ground. Fall has come to Missoula! In this blog, please think about your favorite season (spring, summer, fall or winter) and describe for us what that season is like in your hometown. Besides telling us about the seasonal sights, you can also describe special sounds or smells that come at that time of year, or even the tastes of foods you like to eat.
Because I did not get this posted by Friday, lets say your comment is due by Wednesday 5pm this week. Cheers!
Hi!everyone. I whould like to talk about my fevorite seasone. My homecountry Japan has four seasons. Especially, I like summer. Because summer has many events such as fireworks display, summer festivals and so on. Most of the people go to there wearing a yukata. Yukata is a Japanese traditional pajamas. About two hundred years ago, people used to wear it. Now, yukata brings us the real feeling of summer. Last summer, I went to fireworks display of Sumida river with my friends wearing yukata! My mother teached me how to wear yukata, so I could wear it by myself. I felt Japanese summer directly. On a summer festival day, both sides are lined with many kinds of stalls. We can walk eating hotdogs, fried noodles, French Fries and so on. There are not only food stands but play stands. For expample, scooping goldfish, target shooting and lottery. In summer in Japan, summer festivals and fireworke display are held almost everyday in everywhere. So, if you come to Japan, I recommend to go to both of them. It must be a wonderful memory of your life!
ReplyDeleteThanks for writing this description, Karin - you really reminded me of the wonderful Japanese summer evenings with the food stalls and people strolling in their yukata and sandals. I also remember the wonderful sound of the cicadas!
DeleteHello guys. First of all, the four seasons are clearly distinguished in Japan. All seasons are very nice and they have many advantages, that's why it is hard for me to choose one season. However, my favirite season is fall (autumn). I have 3 reasons. First, my birthday is September 28th, so whenever September comes, I feel happy and I can't wait for my birthday!!! Birthday is a special day once a year. My birthday in this year was awesome and great thanks to my good friends. Second, I like seeing mountains covered in autumnal foliage. When October or Novermber comes, trees and leaves are changing color such as green to yellow or green to red. I can see vorious color leaves in fall. I have been to Yamanashi prefecture to see the colored leaves of autumn 3 years ago. It was beautiful scenery, and I took a photo. The photo have been hung on my house's wall. Third, fall is called that fall is the season which people have a good appetite in Japan. ( People have a good appetite when fall cames.) It is because there is a lot of food like a Japanese chestnut (Kuri), a pear, a matsutake( kind of masuroom), a Pacific saury (Samma) and so on! I always enjoy these food in Japan. As it is terrible hot and humid day, I don't feel like eating anything. On the other hand, I have a big apprtite in fall. Fall is powerful season for me! I think fall is the best season to visit Japan!
ReplyDeleteHello, I agree with your opinion. I was really irresolute to choose my favorite season. Like you, my birthday is September, so if fall came, I feel happy. However, my birthday is 5th, so it is between summer and fall, so I love both of summer and fall. Moreover, I love to see mountains covered in autumnal foliage. I recommend seeing it in Kyoto. Kyoto is famous for colored leaves in Japan. I love to eat these foods! My hometown is famous for fresh fish, so I often eat pacific saury in fall season. Because of I read this comment, I miss pacific saury.
DeleteWhat a nice description, Mina! I think fall is my favorite season too, because it includes so much - early fall is still hot and light like summer; then we get to see the days grow shorter and colder and the leaves change to beautiful colors; finally, the first snow comes, so beautiful and still exciting (unlike February or March, by which time I'm sick of snow). There are also lots of good holidays in the fall in the USA.
DeleteHi everybody. In my hometown we have all four seasons. I like all seasons especially spring and summer, but my favorite season is spring, because in spring flowers bloom and spread their sweet fragrance all around. They make me feel healthy and active. Tajikistan has many big mountains the spring is very beautiful there, by the way, 2nd highest mountains in the world is in Tajikistan. In Tajikistan when spring comes every where becomes green. In spring buds of flowers peep to see its beautiful sight. As one poem said: “You can cut all the flowers but you cannot keep spring from coming” by the way in spring some people fall in love. In Tajikistan during the spring you can see many birds singing, you can see how trees make flowers, you can see the growing plants and every place becomes green and air smells good also in spring the air is always fresh because there is many rains and after each rain during the day you can see beautiful rainbows, by the way in springs there is many thunderstorms. Spring is season of flowers, in spring the nature will alive again. As people say: “Spring is when life’s alive in everything.” Spring is the time of plans and projects. Also Spring is nature’s way of saying, “Let’s party!” In my hometown we enjoyed picnic during this season. I really like this season. Spring is the time when whole nature alive. The best season to visit Tajikistan is spring!
ReplyDeleteYou make it sound so wonderful, Firuz - Tajikistan in spring must be very beautiful. And isn't this when the Navruz holiday falls? I guess everyone is ready for the earth to come alive again after a long cold winter.
DeleteHello, everyone. I like every season, but I love summer especially. I have four reasons. First, I love the weather of summer because I love playing sports outside such as swimming, tennis, running, and so on. I can always feel great sunshine and refreshing wind. Second, I love foods. For instance, we can eat shaved ice with any kind of syrup, yakisoba, okonomiyaki, candy of an apple. Of course we can eat these foods other season, but it is the best way to eat these foods in summer festival. There are a lot of street vendor’s stalls, so we can eat it or other foods. Third, we can see beautiful and colorful fireworks. In my hometown, fireworks display always holds on the sea in the middle of August, so I see fireworks with my family or friends at beach every year. I can’t describe for you how beautiful it is! Finally, I love to wrapping up in a blanket in cold room. Maybe you think it is crazy and bad for environment. I often use air conditioner in my room, and then if I felt a little bit cool, I would wrap in a blanket. It is so enjoyable, and my younger brother does like me. Because of these reasons, I love summer.
ReplyDeleteThere are a lot of fun during summer in Japan as you said. I love going to summer festivals and buying something such as spun sugar (Watagashi) and candy of apricot! Actually I went to a summer festival took place in my home city with my friend in Aug. 4th, 2012. I go to this festival every year. I could not walk smoothly because of a crowd of people, but I really enjoyed the atmosphere of the festival. I want to go to bigger summer festival than my city's. My favorite food is Japanese noodle (Udon or Soba). In summer, I often eat them since I don't big appetite because of great heat. However, Japanese noodle gives me appetite and I can eat a great deal of it! I didn't see fireworks in this summer, so I will have to see beautiful fireworks next year. I can't wait to see them. I want to go to a fireworks display took place at Sumida River someday. Let's go there Chiaki!
DeleteHi, Chiaki. I like winter the best, but your comment reminds me of my sweeeet summer memories. I nearly change my love for winter because I like fireworks!! When I lived in Tokyo,I have been to fireworks festival for three times. In 2009,I went to Tokyo bay area festival and it was so excited because the scare was different from my home country's. Five hundred thousand fireworks were shooting off. In 2011, I went to see Sumida river's fireworks and, it also made me impressed. Watching the fireworks, I took photos and talked with my friends. Fireworks is a moment but, the memory is forever.
DeleteWow - it must be so wonderful to watch the fireworks over the ocean! Certainly, some of the best fireworks I ever saw were at a festival in Japan (those, and the ones in Disneyland). I also like the detail about wrapping up in a blanket in an air conditioned room. It is quirky details like that which make writing sound really authentic!
DeleteHello everyone. I would like to talk about my favorite season. My favorite season is winter for several reasons. First, I like snow. My home town, Nagano is famous for winter sports, and there are snowfalls in winter. I used to play with snow when I was little child. Snow always reminds me of my childhood. In addition there are many events in winter such as New Year’s Day. In New Year’s Day in Japan children get money called Otoshidama from parents or relative. Now I can’t get money because I am no longer small children. But I still feel exited in winter. I want to try snowboarding. I have done snowboarding just once. I can ski but I’m not god at snowboarding. I really want to be cool snowboarder. Also winter is basketball season. I can watch NBA basketball game on TV. When I’m tired of winter, I always watch NBA basketball game on TV or the internet. It’s so fun for me. For these reason, I like winter the best. I am looking forward to snowing because snow reminds me of my hometown, my friends and my family.
ReplyDeleteRe:kan's post
DeleteI also like winter. When I was child, I would have a snowball fight, play with a sled and make a snowman in winter. I wanted to make a snow hut, but there were a few snows in my region. There were many snows in your area, so you might have made a snow hut. I’m envious of you. In addition, I like New Year day. As you said, in Japan there is a custom that children can get money from their relatives. I was looking forward to that every year. In the day, Japanese people eat Japanese traditional foods called “Osechi”. I like it, so I also like winter.
I like winter, too! In winter, I used to go to Karuizawa in Nagano with my family and skid. I really enjoyed it. But we don`t have the annual winter established custom now, brcause all of my family are busy. Kan`s comment reminds me of the beautiful winter memory. So when I go back to Japan, I am going to invite my family to Karuizawa for skiing!! And I also like Japanese New Year`s Day. Because I can eat Japanese traditional dish "Osechiryouri" and I can be given by otoshhidama. I won`t be abli to spend this winter vacation in Japan, but I am really exciting about spending my winter vacation in United States!
DeleteWell if you like winter, you ought to like Montana! We definitely get winter here. Although, sometimes the Missoula valley does not get a ton of snow, there is always lots of snow in the mountains nearby. I hope you get to do a lot of snowboarding this winter and you can get cozy inside and watch basketball afterward.
DeleteHello, everyone! I will talk about my favorite season in Japan. I like summer the best in all seasons, and I have three reasons. First, I prefer hot temperature to cold temperature. If it is cold, I feel like I don’t want to do anything. For example, it has become cold in Missoula recently, so I don’t want to wake up in the morning. When I go back to my room from library in the evening, it is so cold to death. On the contrary, it is hot in summer, but I don’t feel like I don’t want to do anything. When I get up, I can wake up easily. Second, there are many festivals in summer in Japan. For example, the events of the fireworks are hold in many places, and they are beautiful, sophisticated and colorful. Furthermore, when the fireworks are taken place, there are many stands where you can eat Japanese foods and sweets, and you can play. It’s so fan. Finally, I can enter the sea, the river and the pool in summer. I like to play in water. It’s so fun. When I go to the river, I usually enjoy BBQ, and I do watermelon cracking. It’s also fun. That’s why I like summer.
ReplyDeleteFrom reading everyone's blogs, it sounds like summer in Japan is a really special time! One summer sight I really remember was seeing lanterns on the water (at Obon) and watching traditional fisherman near Kyoto fish at night using burning torches and cormorants with collars around their necks. Have you ever seen this? It was fascinating!
DeleteHi everyone! I would like to talk about my favorite season. At the first, I want to say “I don’t like winter!” I really hate cold weather, so I can’t say that my favorite season is winter. And I have hay fever in the spring. I keep sniveling every spring!! Every year in spring, I am suffered from that. Therefore, even though I like scenery in spring, I can’t say that I like spring. Then, which do you think my favorite season is summer or fall??
ReplyDeleteMy favorite season fall!! Because the temperature is comfortable, it not too hot, not too cold, and we can see beautiful colored leaves. In addition to, there are special events in fall. Those are my birthday and Halloween!! And I look forward to eat sweets and dishes which are made of sweet potatoes or marrons. In Japan, we often eat “marron rice” in fall. It is kinds of rice assorted marron. It is really simple food, but taste is amazing!! And, I like taking a walk in fall. During taking a walk, I can see beautiful colored leaves, and I can smell of kumquats. The smell makes me calm. For these reason, I love fall very much.
I love fall for a lot of the same reasons that you do! I'd have to say from the end of August until the end of the year is really my favorite (okay, that includes a little summer and a little winter too, so maybe I am cheating). The foods you mention sound delicious!

ReplyDeleteHello everyone. There are four seasons in Japan. I like winter, but I haven’t liked winter since I was born. My birthday’s date is July 1st, and somehow I have liked summer for 19 years. When summer came, I was excited because I ate my birthday cake and got present from my friends. But my life of university changed my mind. When I was sophomore, I started to join a camp club, and I went to an uninhabited island in summer and a snow mountain in winter. In especially, the winter trip was amazing for me. In winter vacation, I went to Toyama prefecture, which is the middle of japan and there is covered with more than 3m snow’s layers in winter. On the trip, I played sleigh ride. There was a long ski slope in my lodgings and the slope was more than 100m.When I was sliding, I felt I rode a roller coaster and it was so refreshing. The most memorial event in the trip is to make a kamakura. Kamakura is a house made by snow, and it is traditional event to make Kamakura in cold areas in japan. First, I corrected snow by a shovel and put snow in a box. After that I stepped on a lump of snow and hardened it. Then I repeated this work. It took 3hours to make a kamakura. Because I worked outside, I was so cold, but after making the kamakura I got hot. In the night I talked with my friend in the kamakura with light up. This experience is the most impressive event for me in university, and I became winter. Below url show how to make kamakura!

Re: Genki's post
DeleteI don't like winter, but there are nice points as you said. I know about kamakura, but i didn't know how to make it! It sounds very hard and difficult to make kamakura. I wonder why inside of kamakura is worm.. It's made of snow. Snow is cold like ice. I can't believe that. And you could have nice experience in the trip. Did you eat rice cakes in the kamakura? I heard eating rice cakes inside of kamakura is especially delicious!! I want to try it someday.
Wow - thanks for showing us how to make a kamakura! It looks like a lot of work, but you must have felt great after you made it! I guess we would call it a snow fort or use the eskimo word, "igloo." (Eskimos live in Northern Canada and Alaska). It sounds like you have had some really great experiences!
