When I was young, it seemed like all adults smoked cigarettes.  There were advertisements and ashtrays everywhere, and it was just a really common habit.  Over the years, though, Americans have been smoking less and less.  In recent years, many public places in the US, such as restaurants, waiting rooms, even parks, have been declared smoke-free zones.  Last year, the whole University of Montana campus became a smoke-free zone.  This was a somewhat controversial decision (which means people could see both good and bad points to such a move).  What is your opinion about the fact that smoking is prohibited on the University of Montana campus?  Can you give at least one example to support your opinion?  Remember - 200-300 words.

  1. Hello guys. First of all, I hate smoking because there are no advantages at all. Whole my home university also became a smoke-free zone except for smoking areas. When I knew that, I was glad and relieved. I heard cigarettes make people relaxed, but people can be relaxed without cigarettes, such as working out, listening to the music or talking with friends. Smoking has the risk of getting lung cancer and growing teeth yellowish. My part time job is a dental assistant in Japan, so I usually see a patient who has teeth badly stained. Even a dentist cannot remove a stain clearly. Whenever I see such as patients, I want them to quit smoking. Cigarettes have a lot of harmful materials to health. Furthermore, sidestream smoke includes more harmful smoke than mainstream smoke. In other words, non-smokers are affected by smoke more than smokers. Smokers can be enjoying as smoking, but I suffer from smoking at that time. The university is where all people could have fun, that is why, I accept the decision of the University of Montana. It will be good for smokers to make a smoking areas. If a smoking areas are built someday, smokers cound smoke in the University of Montana, and non-smokers don't draw harmuful smoke into the lungs. It is good idea both smokers and non-smokers. Thanks for reading!

    1. Hi Mina - I think I agree with you about the smoking areas. I don't like breathing smoke either, but it seems like this rule is hard to enforce and so too many people break the rule and bother others with their smoke. If there were clear smoking areas, that might solve the problem.

    2. I totally agree with you Mina, I cannot beleive that there is any advantage of smoking!! because smoker take the bad air inside their bodies and bother other people too, by giving them unclean air. Even if you really do not like the small, you have nothing to do. thank you.

  2. Hello, everyone! I'd like to talk about my opinion of the fact that smoking is prohibited on the University of Montana campus. My opinion is that I agree with smoking prohibited on the campus. I have three reason about it. First, smoking isn't healthy for our body. If one carries on smoking, the posibility that man become sick like heart trouble, stroke and pulmonary emphysema could rise. In addition, WHO, World Health Organization reported that about 5.4million people in the world died every year because of cigaratte. Second, somking has a bad influence on not only a smoker but also people around a smoker. The smoke which people around a smoker breathe is called "passive inhalation of cigarette smoke". It makes people who breathing it caused lung cancer. Finally, if people are permitted to smoke on the campus, there will be many cigarette butts thrown away. A few years ago, students were permitted to smoke in the campus of my university. But many students smoked walking aroud the campus and threw away it in the campus, so students were prohibited to smoke in the campus except smoking area. Because of this, cigarette buts decreased in the campus. Therefore, smoking should be prohibited on the University of Montana campus.

    1. I agree with tobacco free campus too. All smokers have to consider about nonsmokers. I think the idea of tobacco is great idea but sometimes it has defects. For example there are a lot of litters of tobacco around the dorm. If there are smoking spaces near the dorm, such litters would decrease. I often smoke, but I never throw away tobacco. All smokers have to observe tobacco free campus rules, but I think the rule can have some points to improve. I could meet Americans when I smoke, so smoking can be tool to make friends for student especially for students from another country like me. I know well smoking is totally bad for my health, so in the near future I quit smoking.

    2. Before UM was smoke free, there were special containers for smokers to put their cigarette butts in. Now that it is smoke free, the containers are gone, so you see the butts all over the ground in areas where people like to break the rules and smoke (ie: behind the dorms near the Lommasson back parking lot). This is a problem, I think.

  4. Hi guys, First, I agree with the idea of tobacco free campus, because smoking will affect smokers and nonsmokers in many ways. for example, smoke will bring to us breath or heart problems, also smoker will always smells bad, it may cost lung cancer which will lead to death. Second, smoking places will look very bad because of cigarettes butts and the burned places, so it's will distort the view of the campus, for example, must of the garbage containers on the campus were burned because smokers when they finished their cigarettes, they turned it off on the edge of the garbage containers. Third, I'm smoker and I hate smoke in the campus, but sometimes I don't have place to smoke in, so I smoke in the campus. Again, I agree with that idea, but at least they should build places to smoke in. I'm not sure about the main reason of this idea, but if they created it to let us quit smoking, they are wrong, because we have many places that we can smoke in. Also, I have an idea, why they don't built small glasses rooms around the campus to let smoker smoke in it, because by this way smokers won't hurt the people around them.

    1. Re:Mofadal's post
I agree with Mof’s idea. If University of Montana builds spaces of smoking area, and students smoke there, smokers can smoke pleasantly, and many cigarettes butts on campus will decrease. Or if possible, the university should recommend students who smoke to become interested in their hobbies. For example, my friend used to smoke too much two years ago. And then he became interested in soccer. Soccer players use a lot of energy, but he was burning low because of smoking. So, he fell out of smoking. Now, he hasn’t been smoking since he started playing soccer. That’s why the university should encourage students to become interested in something.

    2. I think this is a good idea too. It shows consideration for people who don't want to breathe smoke, but it doesn't create a situation where smokers have no choice but to quit or break the rules. It seems like a reasonable compromise to me. I also like Keito's suggestion that the U could offer some kinds of positive support program for people who want to give up smoking and replace it with other activities.

  5. Hello everyone. I agree with the opinion that smoking is prohibited on campus. I have three reasons to support my opinion. First, smoking is harmful to our health. keeping smoking brings about some serious diseases, such as cancer of the lungs, a stroke, high blood pressure and so on. It dosen`t say too much that smoking has no advantages. Secondly, smoking brings bad influence not only smoker but also people who stand near the smoker. Why do we have to breathe harmful air? That`s not fair. Thirdly, I`m worry about cigarette butts. The University of Montana`s campus is so beautiful. But if there are many cigarette butts on the road, can we say is this campus really beautiful? I don`t think so. Furthermore, there are some animals, such as deer and squirrels. If they eat cigarette butts , what happen to them? As mentioned above, cigarette butts cause not only corrupt university discipline but also bad influence to animals. Finally, I think smoking has no advantages at all. Certainly, smoking make us refresh and bring more concentrarion. But I recommend not smoking but go out. You had better breathe nature fresh air because you live in Missoula!!

    1. Hi Karin, I like your supporting reasons, but I'm not sure about that animals may eat the cigarettes butts.

    2. I agree about how ugly the cigarette butts around campus look. Although I like the IDEA of a smoke free campus, I think it results in a lot of people breaking the rule, and since there are no longer any ashtrays, the butts end up on the ground - yuck!

    3. hi Karin, I also agree that smoking is harmful to our health and keeping smoking brings about some serious diseases but about breathing harmful air, the cars and factories are also making air dirty, so smoking can not be a reason to make air dirty, because it is very small. About cigarette butts, as Mofadal said, animals may not eat cigarettes butts, because it is not a grass or fresh leaf. and I'm agree that cigarette butts looks ugly.

  6. Hello everyone, I would like to tell you that i totally agree that smoking should be prohibited on the University of Montana campus.First of all I think smokers make many causes to continue smoke but the fact is that half of the smoker will die younger by having cancer or other scary diseases and usually they would have that nasty smell after they smoke. I have three reasons to sport my opinion. First, smoking has bad effects not only in the smokers but in non smoker people too. One of these effects is that non smoker can triggers nicotine cravings and directly alters brain function, similar to actually smoking a cigarette, I read this in Everyday Health website. Second, it's not respectful to ignore other people feelings because we live in one campus together as a small family. Also, some people try to quit smoking but if they smell or see other smokers that would be hard for them to continue what they are trying to do.my last reason is that if the smokers can't smoke we can keep our campus air clean and healthy and just smell the fresh air there, I think that would be awesome.Hope that my ideas convince you to agree with me, thanks!

    2. Yes, I believe so. I think the most important reasons that there are a lot of people agree to prohibited smoking on campus, are that to have a clean air and and be respectful to the others. Thank you. :)

  7. Hello,I think I have to discuss this topic by considering two human rights.
One is a right that people can pass heathly live. I don't know the process that the whole University of Montana campus became a smoke-free zone in last yaer, but I think that it means there is a movement priventing people from injuring of smorking in the world. In fact, the World Health Organization(WHO) enacted a treaty about restricting smorking in 2004. Something else that is bad is second hand smoke, because it can cause health concern to other people. Second hand smoke is the breathing in of smoke from different people. Smoking also can cause lung cancer, respiratory cancer, and heart disease, all which can lead to death. Smoking is the largest cause of death in the world.
But some people want to smoke in the University of montana. I think the university should protect this right. Some good things about smoking are that smoking can relive stress, smoking can feel good, smoking calms your nerves, and smoking helps you lose weight by supressing your appetite. On some occasions, smoking can casue people to focus better, and think more clearly. Actually, my classmates go to smoking in a break time, which relives stress, and helps them focus more in class. Overall, I think that smoking is a bad habit, and can lead to many diseases, and problems, but smoking can also help people lose stress, and take a break off of things. The university must balance those two rights.

    1. I think smoking makes us refresh and bring more concentration, too. I have never smoked, but my father used to smoke. One day I asked him, "Why did you use to smoke?" He said, "Smoking had maked my thinking clear and refresh. Especially, I could have concentrated on my work." When I heared his opnion, I thought that smoking has adventages and disadvantages as you thought. Now, I am asked about smoking problem in the campus and read your opinion, I am convinced that it is not good solution to deny smoking squarely. So, I think it is tha best way to propose a solution that agree both of them. I know it`s so difficult. But, it is a foolish idea to conclude that smoking is bad.

    2. There is an elememt of truth in what you said. Certainly, there are some advantages to smoke such as feeling good, calming nurvous or losing weight. (Actually I wonder if it would be true?) The University of Montana should think balance between smoker and non-smoker. It is important to protect the smoker's right because they understand how harmful it is and they might be sorry for smoking. But still they can't stop smoking. it is not good to have a distorted way of thinking. We and The unicersity of Montana should hear the opinion from smokers. Of course University also hear non-smoker's opinion. However, if smokers want to smoke on the campus, I will oppose it. If there is no harm to smoke for non-smoker, I wouldn't oppose it, but there is harm for us in spite of not smoking. Anyway, it is important to think both opinions.

    4. Re:Genki's post
I didn’t consider about advantages of smoking. I can say there are some advantages of smoking. Actually, one of my friends started smoking to lose her weight. I worry about her. Anyway, I agree with your opinion. Both two rights should be protected. However, to protect people’s health and environment, we should reduce smoking. To realize that, tobacco-free campus is one of good ways. So, it is seem to be a little difficult matter to find the best answer.

    5. I'm not sure smoking has any real advantages that can't be better addressed by healthier habits (ie: exercise, etc.) However, I think Genki makes a good point about protecting the rights of everyone - nonsmokers AND smokers. By making the entire campus non-smoking, people are forced to choose between quitting smoking and becoming rule-breakers. This is called "legislating morality," or making a law to force people to give up a bad habit. I don't think it usually works very well, at least not in a country like the USA.

  8. Hi everyone! First of all, I would like to talk about my opinion about smoking. Actually, there are many smokers in my class and my friends. Of cause, I don’t hate them. However, there are ill-mannered smokers. I can’t understand them. While they are walking, they are smoking tobaccos. That could be harmful to other people, especially to children. Actually, some accidents were happened to children cause of smoking while walking. Cause of such ill-mannered smokers, children receive burned. If worst comes to worst, the injured people might have operation to cure the burn. Not only that but also ill-mannered smokers throw cigarette butts away anywhere. It could be pollution of environment. They would be cause of many kinds of damages. To reduce numbers of such ill-mannered people, we need to have tobacco free area. Therefore, I think it is good action that UM became tobacco-free zone. Though, it is too strict for smokers. I think it would be better if there are smoking rooms each of buildings in UM. Then, there will be comfortable place for both smokers and non-smokers. If you are smoker, I want to ask you to think about non-smokers and environment. Keep beautiful and comfortable campus with each other!!!!

I was interested in your comment because I think we have to think about ill-manner. I often see a people smoking while they are walking. Moreover, they lower the tip of cigarette. If the cigarette touched children, the children would injure. Maybe the ill-manner people don’t care about it. By the way, there are many smoker in this campus, so I agree your opinion that the UM make smoking area in each buildings. If there is smoking area, the garbage might be decrease. We have to care about environment of this campus and world. I really agree your opinions. Thank you.

    2. You make a good point about manners. I think ultimately good manners come from considering the needs and comfort of other people. Therefore, I think it would be best for both smokers AND nonsmokers to consider each others needs and find a solution that works for everyone (such as the enclosed smoking areas some people have proposed). It is one thing to have - say - a nonsmoking restaurant because smokers can just step outside, but it is pretty difficult to leave campus to have a cigarette. And its not really fair to the people who have houses across the street from campus to suddenly find smokers in their yards.

  9. Hello everyone. First of all, I agree with this opinion that smoking is prohibited on the University of Montana because many people don’t like smell of smoking including me. Besides this thing, smoking affects everybody. Maybe you know, the smoke affects non-smoking person rather than smoker. Of course, if you smoked, the rate of cancer might rise. However it occurs to non-smoking people. If non-smoker breathed smoke, their rate of cancer might rise. I think it is unfair. Moreover, there are people who don’t throw garbage away in ashtray, so the garbage is increasing now. Have you ever seen the grasses near the Daniway Hall? There are a lot of cigarette butts. When I see it, I couldn’t believe this thing. Because of these things, I agree its opinion. Now in Japan, smoking prohibition space is spreading too. For example, the public place such as a restaurant, a university and a station, there are separate with smoking space, so if we don’t like smell of smoke, we can choose non-smoking space. In this university, I saw many advertisements of tobacco free campus, but I saw people who smoking in this campus. What does it mean? What is the differences tabacco and cigarette? I think these are the same as affect. I want to know about it.

    1. RE:Chiaki's comment
I can’t explain the difference between tobacco and cigarette, but I was interested in your comment because I haven’t thought cigarettes threw away by the roadside seriously. When I worked as an intern at a newspaper company for students in Japan, I interviewed a volunteer club. In those days, they met at Shibuya every Saturday in the early morning, and they picked up garbage. I joined, and we collected a lot of garbage for two hours. Surprisingly, contents were mostly cigarettes. Cigarettes were so small that I was not be able to notice, but actually, there were many cigarettes on the road. I think that we have to more take care not the problem that cigarettes attack human, but the effect for environment.

      Delete
    2. You are right, Chiaki, that cigarettes ARE tobacco. I do not think that UM has been very successful in enforcing the tobacco free campus rule, and the result is all this cigarette trash around. Though I really like the idea of not breathing smoke on campus, I don't think UM should have made a rule so strict that it couldn't realistically be followed or enforced.

  10. hello everyone, I agree with smoking is prohibited in University of Montana campus. Out of campus, the smokers can smoke and there we can see many smokers. Smoking has advantages and disadvantages. For example advantages: -It helps you eat less. Gives you quick and temporary stress relief. You become Happy and Stress less for a while. You will become slimmer. Helps you in awkward moments when you have nothing to do. Gives you smoky breathe rather then bad breathe. Easy to make a conversation when someone looking for a smoke. Gives you something to do with your hands, especially during awkward conversations. Relaxing in some cases. It also has some disadvantages: -Wastes money. Lung Cancer & Health Problems. Permanent cough. Addiction. Replaces good breathe with smoky breathe. Some people and friends look at you differently. Not the best when your having a relationship with a non-smoker. Loose interest in sport. In some cases, family looses trust in you and gives you big lectures. And also when smokers smoke they drop cigarette butts and the environments become dirty. Now days out of campus especially near Lommasson Center, you can see many smokers when they smoke they can hurt the nature and other non-smoking people and fortunately smoking is prohibited in University of Montana campus. And I happy that smokers are less than non-smokers. Thank you!
